No idea what the hourly rate works out at my LBS, but I pay £50 for a service - bike rides like new afterwards, which is just as well, both my bikes are under one year old!
I took two wheels into my LBS on Saturday morning. One he ordered the wrong bearings so, no charge. The second he couldn't charge the freewheel, again no charge. He doesn't charge me for labour. Just parts. You get to know someone, you stick with them :)
My recent service was £45 plus any parts.
I believe our local Mercedes dealer charges £115 per hour for labour, which has limited relevance to your situation but may help put things into perspective.
What is much more important is to mention the joy that's to be had when you do your own maintenance. Few things compare with the satisfaction you get from doing it just right, in your own time, with your own hands and to your own high standards. Of course, if everyone did it the bike shops would close but I'm prepared to take that risk.
If you think I'm prepared to break one of my nails fettling MtB - do you know how much a decent set of shellacs cost!!!!!!
