maglia rosa

The pink jersey, the maglia rosa,  is awarded to the GC leader of the Giro d'Italia. First awarded in 1931, the colour pink was inspired by the colour of  the pages of  La Gazzetta dello Sport, the original sponsor of the Giro. This was a blatant borrow from the Tour de France - the maillot jaune was inspired by the colour of the pages of the daily French sports paper, L'Auto, that had inaugurated the Tour.

The Italian Learco Guerrao will forever be recorded in cycling lore as the first rider to wear the maglia rosa when he won the first stage of the 1931 Giro, though it was his compatriot, Francesco Camusso wo took the title that year.

The current incumbent is Michele Scarponi of Italy, who inherited the jersey from Alberto Contador, who was stripped of the maglia rosa for doping offences.
