One year record attempt: Steve Abraham knocked off his bike!

After riding a mammoth 16,000+ miles so far this year chasing the one year time trial record, British AUDAX legend Steve Abraham has been knocked off his bike by an inattentive moped rider. Earlier today there were reports that Steve had been involved in an "incident" and the bad news was confirmed this afternoon. This statement was taken from his Twitter feed:

"Sad to announce that 8:10am Steve was ridden into by a moped. Steve tried to carry on but stopped in Wellington. He was collected by one of the team and taken to hospital.

He has 2 broken bones in his ankle and is currently in plaster. It is looking highly likely that he will require an operation to have a plate and screws. That is all the information available at the moment."

We all know Steve is one tough cookie, it takes a certain kind of madman to chase a record as crazy as the year (currently 75,065 miles set by Tommy Godwin in 1939) so hopefully this won't be the end of Steve's record attempt. Here's hoping for good news and a speedy recovery!

How is this guy still smiling?  He must have the philosophical nature to match his remarkable endurance.  Here's hoping he is back on the bike sometime soon.

More news from his Twitter is that he was hit by a "suspended drunk motorcyclist" but he is still in good spirits and hasn't given up on the record yet!

We were chatting about Steve Abraham on our club ride at the weekend, so a real shame to hear that his attempt to beat Tommy Goodwin's record has been dealt a severe blow. Someone was mentioning that there is a guy in the USA who is also on track to beat the record, but he is riding pan flat roads. Part of me really wants to see Tommy keep his record though - there is something far more heroic in his achievement - just look at that bike and all his clobber in the photo for a start!
