Strava has today unveiled its Global Heatmap, an interactive data visualisation featuring more than 1 billion activities from Strava athletes across the globe. The map boasts six times more data than their original version in 2015, and incorporates a wide variety of year-round land and water activities.

If you are not familiar with Strava’s heatmap, it is essentially a data visualisation tool that records the activities of all Strava athletes around the world and provides a fascinating insight into where the Strava community is most active.  The Global heatmap unveiled today has been generated by more than two-hundred thousand years’ worth of activity that cover nearly 17 billion miles.

You can visit the new Strava Global Heatmap here and zoom in and out to take a closer look at activities from any location on the world, including your own geographical locality. You also have the option of selecting different activities.

It’s not just data collected from runners and cyclists, but a total of 31 different activities were recorded, including skiers, kite boarders and even mountaineers on Everest, English Channel swimmers and hikers in Patagonia.

Interesting seeing the different countries around the globe that have embraced Strava. Check out the heat map difference between North and South Korea!

The UK seems very well represented on this map, and for some reason that makes me a little uneasy.
