This is all too common - and the type of thing that sometimes puts me off getting on my bike, which I find upsetting/frustrating. I sometimes wonder whether a lot of the cycle lanes are put in simply so the council/borough can claim it is fulfilling certain criteria and say how wonderful they are and how much they are doing for cyclists. Whether the 'planners' have ever even been on a bike, never mind tried to cycle the lanes they 'plan' is a whole different story. As this video shows, cycle lanes just seem to disappear when as a cyclist you need it most - approaching lights, junctions etc. Pinch-points are the worst, particularly when they give cars in one direction a priority - I have had cars ignore me when it is my priority, and simply drive through regardless. And don't get me started on cars who seem to think the box at lights intended for cyclists is for their sole use so they can beat the lights. I must stop now, rant in danger of getting out of control!!!
Comment by Karl on February 14, 2013 at 19:00 There are places in Taiwan which have some great cycle paths - mostly along the rivers. Of course it's not all like that but they are putting in lots and lots of cycleways. I can ride for 50 miles without going on the road.

Comment by Karl on February 14, 2013 at 18:02 Good video.. I just never bother with them. The worst sort are those highlighted here where the lane vanishes at a pinch point - just when you need it most. Rather than getting traffic to slow a little you are basically bullied into the gutter.
I'm sure one of the problems is that cycle lanes are measured in miles and not quality. Essentially nothing has been done to these roads other than add some paint.
